For four years, Lynzee Turner and Chandler Grassie called Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, New Mexico, home. Life on base had its blessings, but it also meant constant transition. Chandler, an active-duty serviceman, had spent the last six years deployed from place to place, while Lynzee navigated those changes alongside him. Deep down, they longed for stability — a place of their own where they could begin building their future together.
“When Chandler’s military contract ended, we knew it was time,” Lynzee shares. “We were ready to put down roots back in Amarillo, near family, and start a new chapter.”
Their decision to buy a home was inspired by family. Chandler’s mom and sister both owned Betenbough homes in Lubbock and spoke highly of their experience. With that encouragement, Lynzee and Chandler reached out to the Betenbough Amarillo team in January 2025. That’s when they met Courtney Grimes, new home specialist.
From the very first conversation, Courtney stood out. “She didn’t just help us house-hunt; she cared about us,” Lynzee says. “She took time to understand our goals, the emotions behind this decision, and what it meant to leave the military lifestyle behind.”
After years of military service, Chandler hoped his transition to civilian life would be smooth. He discovered, however, that his experience in the armed forces didn’t mean what he thought it would to prospective employers; he had a difficult time finding a good job. Chandler and Lynzee were looking forward to using a VA loan to purchase their new home, but qualifying for it proved impossible due to credit history and circumstances beyond their control while living on base. Those obstacles, plus having very little savings for a down payment, made the dream of owning a home feel fragile. “It was scary,” Chandler admits. “There were moments when we thought this might not be possible.”
Courtney confirms that their road to qualifying for a loan was bumpy. Moving to Amarillo and not yet being employed complicated the qualification process. A preferred loan officer helped them get there. Lynzee and Chandler bought a completed available home which had been discounted, and they used flex cash to help cover closing costs.
In contrast to the shocks and disappointments they’d faced after leaving the military, Lynzee describes the home buyer journey with Betenbough Homes as “over the top.” Courtney walked with the couple every step of the way. She explained the process in plain terms, answered every question, and steadied their nerves when uncertainty crept in. Lynzee laughs, remembering, “I called her constantly, and she never made me feel like a bother. She was our backbone through it all. For two people who had never purchased a home before, Courtney’s support made a world of difference.”
When they found the one (a Jennifer floor plan in The Meadows), both knew it was home. It wasn’t just the style they loved, but the freedom it represented. After years of military housing and rentals, this home marked a new beginning. “Renting always felt like money disappearing,” Chandler said. “Owning this house makes me feel responsible and proud. It’s our first big step as adults together.”
With the help of family and Betenbough’s flex cash, the impossible became reality. In June 2025, Lynzee and Chandler closed on their very first home. They remember the moment their dogs ran through the backyard. It finally felt real.
Now settled in Amarillo, they are filled with gratitude for the quality of their home, the community they’ve joined, and the support they received along the way. “They didn’t just sell us a house,” Lynzee reflects. “They opened the door to our future.”
And for Courtney, the joy was mutual: “Helping them buy their first home after Chandler’s years of serving our country — it felt like I got to serve them in return.”
