Imagine a beauty salon full of peace and relaxation, where the atmosphere celebrates your God-given radiance. Picture a place where you can slow down and recharge while being pampered. That has been the long-time dream of Cassie Schmidt, wife of Hanson Schmidt, permit coordinator for Betenbough Homes.
In the summer of 2024, the couple found the perfect commercial space in Lubbock for Cassie’s new salon, but it would need a lot of work. They got a bid on the renovations, and it was much higher than they expected.
Hanson discussed the bid with his co-workers, and they suggested he have the construction coaches take a look at it.
That’s when Alex Bennett, construction training coach for Betenbough Homes, got involved. Hanson was just hoping to get contact information for trade partners who might help, but Alex became interested in taking on the project himself. Alex says, “Hanson showed me the original estimate. It was a lot of money. I knew they were being taken advantage of. I met with them, looked over everything, and offered to help.”
Alex’s estimate was much less than the original one, and his bid even included more work like painting and replacing the old ceiling tiles. Cassie felt Alex truly listened to her. She describes him by saying, “He didn’t try to push his own agenda. He was genuinely there to help me.” The Schmidts jumped at the chance to have Alex renovate the space.
Cassie loved working with Alex, saying that he communicated well, followed through on his word, and did excellent work. The renovations were completed in September. After the final walkthrough with Alex, Cassie’s words were, “The salon is perfect.”
Hanson’s leader at Betenbough Homes is Kevin Hinds, permitting manager. Through Hanson, Kevin kept up with Cassie’s journey to open the salon. He couldn’t send Hanson and Cassie to the August Work With Purpose Conference because he’d already committed to send other teammates. But the timing of the conference seemed perfect for Cassie, so Kevin personally bought her ticket, in his words, “as a very small investment toward a new Kingdom outpost.”
Cassie shares that the Conference rekindled her desire to use her passion—hair—to love on people and share what the Lord has done for her. “Work With Purpose reminded me how to cultivate meaningful community,” she says.
Gabriela Wilbanks, creative manager for Betenbough Business Services, heard about Cassie and her salon. She offered for her team to design Cassie’s logo and branding. Cassie met with them to share her vision. The creative team brainstormed ideas, then Gabriela assigned the project to Katelyn Killebrew, illustrative designer for Betenbough Business Services, who was in her first week on the job! Katelyn got her feet wet in her new role, and Cassie got a logo she absolutely loves! She says, “Katelyn took my scrambled ideas and made them come to life.”
Flooring, doors, and outlet covers came from Elevate Building Supply. Jakie Diggs, sales coach for Betenbough Homes, worked nights and weekends to help with renovations. Kadi Stunz, wife of Jake Stunz, marketing strategy manager, professionally photographed the salon. So many people from the Betenbough family came together, each planting a seed that ultimately grew into The Grove Salon Suites.
For anyone outside our company culture, it might be hard to imagine why so many people would selflessly help Cassie launch her business. Alex expresses it best: “Because it’s the right thing to do. People are more important than profit. Being at Betenbough taught me that.”
